This month, we honor and focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. But Black history is American history and should not be relegated to a single month of the year, but rather be celebrated and integrated into all facets of life (and all places of learning) all year long.
In 1926, historian Carter G. Woodson chose February for Black History Month observance because of the birthdays of President Abraham Lincoln (February 12th) and abolitionist Frederick Douglass (February 14th), both of which Black communities had celebrated since the late 19th century.
Though we strive to acknowledge the accomplishments of all communities during the year, this month we encourage you to take time to learn and honor the history of the Black diaspora with a lens toward how this history shows up in our everyday lives. We should also be cognizant of the attempts to erase the contributions of Black people in our society and be committed to combatting anti-Black racism. Learn more about this observance, as well as ways to get involved, here: https://www.blackhistorymonth.gov/
